Why ATI Sold Itself

VRZone:

"It is slightly off tradition that the GPU company's flagship product sails off not to meet the flagship of it's competitor, but one target lower".

One has to acknowledge ATI's brilliant move to sell while they realised first hand that they were going the way of the graphics dodo -3dfx. Dwindling sales, massive losses, and now a delayed product launch not even close to competition. It's hard to imagine how AMD can still say they are the smarter choice. Clearly the worst you can do right now is couple an AMD CPU with an ATI graphics.

Brilliant.

Actually I wouldn't draw a conclusion that early. I believe R600 still has room to improvement, with new driver releases.

However, one thing baffles me.. why did R600's performance severely fluctuate?

AMD is finished. ATI made a brilliant move. They knew the company was going down so they sold it to AMD and booked a huge fortune. The Ati management team would have made a fortune getting cash for their Ati stock. Now they can simply retire from AMD with no worries.

AMD BK Q2'08.

Nice benchmark there =)
Even though it cant be taken without any quantities of salt since it shows the X1950 being faster which in reality just is not the case, but it still shows how inferior AMD made Radeon.

Well, taking the worst bench of the lot, with suspected driver issue, and posting it as the representative is....intentional misrepresentation (aka lying).

I would be lying if I said the picture showed AMD's poor performance compared to NVIDIA. But I did not. Maybe I was posting the image to represent AMD's exessively delayed product not beating the competitor and yet still having driver problems. As soon as you figure which of the 3 problems is the worst and could show me a better image to represent AMD's woes, then i will be most delighted to post them for you.

HARD LAUNCH BABY! I knew AMD "waited" on (notice I didn't say delay) the launch so they could "HARD LAUNCH" one of the 10 promised products! And we can now wait an additional 3 months for a paper launch of the rest...

I wonder where the INQ is now, when they were talking up AMD's influence on ATI a few months back when they fell hook line and sinker for the "we're delaying the release in order to do a 10 product hard launch"

Ahhh... AMD = integrity!

At least they are learning the PR game... financial times website has managed to confuse AMD releasing the K10 (oops, I mean "10h") name as an ACTUAL LAUNCH of the product!

HD2900XT costs more than the 8800 GTS, uses way more power and is slower!
